When October rolls around it is Steelhead Time. This is casting with spawn and beads for the most part , but we do get the plugs out later in the season. I plan to fish this year untill deer season which is Nov.15.
Manistee River Fishing Report
March 27, 2016
The fishing report is.....the fishing is good! We had the Ford retirees fishing tournament this week and everyone caught fish. The best numbers of fish were caught below Tippy Dam, within a mile or so. Yours truly stayed down in the swamp and caught the two biggest fish, 12 pounds was the winner, not a monster but a nice fresh male. Photo below.
Water conditions are very good at this time, the snowmelt has come and gone for the most part. Plug fishing has been working for me but good catches have been coming on spawn beads and yarn also.
Typically where I fish , about halfway between the dam and the lake the best fishing is late feb. thru March. In April we get some great fishing for dropbacks, post spawn fish returning to the lake. There is some spawning activity in the areas we fish, but most of the gravel is near the dam and so are the people!
It just doesnt seem like it, but this will be year 34 for me being a fishing guide.
There should be at least another month of spring fishing and a few dates are open!
Late summer and early fall continue to be a popular time for fishing on the Big Manistee River. With two species of Salmon and Steelhead there is always something to fish for. I have a few prime dates open.
